Otonomo Neutral Server
Securely offer personal mobility services to European drivers
What is Neutral Server?
The neutral server initiative, sponsored by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), is a joint effort supporting a solution that makes automotive data available to interested third-party service providers in a safe and secure manner, without requiring those third parties to sign a contract directly with each automotive manufacturer.
The neutral server initiative was announced in late 2016 and received critical support from the European Union, automotive OEMs, and other automotive industry stakeholders such as insurance companies, energy providers, and automotive maintenance services. What is Neutral Server?

Benefits of Neutral Server
Protect Drivers with Secure, Off-Board Data Access
The most important function of a neutral server is protecting driver safety. The neutral server opens up automotive data once it is out of the vehicle, so that the vehicle is safe from hackers and malfunctions caused by overloads to the vehicle’s computing capacity.
Meet Drivers’ Privacy Expectations and Regulatory Requirements
Drivers expect that their data won’t be used without their consent, and consent management is a basic requirement to meet privacy regulations like GDPR. That’s why it’s a component of the Otonomo Neutral Server solution.
The Otonomo Consent Management Hub handles drivers’ consent flows and ensures that personal automotive data is only shared with third-party service providers once drivers have given consent, on a per-service basis.
Gain Simplified Automotive Data Access
Application integration can be a big issue in the automotive data world. Each manufacturer (and sometimes each model) emits different parameters and uses different parameter names and units of measurement. Extraction protocols can also vary.
The Otonomo Platform abstracts complexity from the service provider. Services providers must only build one integration to access data from participating OEMs.
The Platform also simplifies legal processes, eliminating the need for separate contract negotiations with each participating OEM.
Protect Participating OEMs
Vehicle manufacturers are concerned with the potential liability that could come from opening up their datasets to third parties. The Otonomo Neutral Server solution offers a means for OEMs to maintain secure end-to-end communication with the off-board cloud, as they are obligated to do. In addition, they can protect their intellectual property because they control which data is accessible to third-party service providers.
Neutral server increases ROI for OEMs and service providers
By providing access to automotive data in a safe, secure way, the Neutral Server opens up new levels of value for drivers, OEMs, and service providers.
Drivers
Drivers have access to more third-party services that give them a better experience driving and operating their cars.
OEMs
OEMs can achieve a higher market value for automotive data, while maintaining full control over what categories of data they make available.
Service providers
Service providers can go to market faster, integrate car data in a much simpler way, and meet drivers’ privacy expectations.
